Birds of 2013

Starting this list over halfway into the year is not ideal, but I’ve been keeping a running tally of new year birds written on scraps of paper and random noteboooks here and there. So this list will be updated as I find all the little lists and compile them here! I am sure to be missing a few species here and there, unfortunately, but that’s the impetus for making sure I get it right come 2014.

January
I spent the winter holiday with Ethan in his native California, where we also took part in a Christmas Bird Count with local Orange County birders (Sea & Sage Audubon Society). Ethan and I were assigned to a park in Irvine along with another birder. Of course, all of those birds were listed under December 2012. However, upon our return to North Carolina, we took part in another CBC, this time in our city of Wilmington with the local bird club. It took place in Airlie Gardens; here is our count list:

April
I was hired for avian fieldwork, working locally in longleaf pine forest as well as doing riparian bird surveys around S-E NC rivers (Cape Fear, etc). It was an exceptionally cool spring and that impacted the bird surveys, mostly retarding the arrival and abundance of certain migrants.
